Brushing & Flossing
Using a soft bristled toothbrush, brush all surfaces of the teeth at least 3 times per day. Use a circular, vibrating motion and brush about 10 seconds per tooth. Pay special attention to the gumline areas!!! Use ACT Fluoride rinse once a day.
Floss once per day to remove plaque left behind by brushing. Use your oss threader or stiff end of the floss to help pull the floss under the orthodontic wire. Floss gently around the teeth and braces. Make sure to keep the floss "hugged" to the tooth in order to avoid damaging the gum tissue.
Oral Hygiene Program
Oral hygiene is a VERY important component during orthodontic treatment. It is the patient’s responsibility to demonstrate excellent brushing and flossing skills. We will monitor oral hygiene at each appointment. At Webb Orthodontics, we have adopted a "3 Strike Oral Hygiene Program" to ensure our patients have continued good oral health. After 3 strikes, early termination of orthodontic treatment may be necessary.
Decalcifications are white spots on the teeth and are areas where the enamel is weakened and are almost cavities. This problem is completely PREVENTABLE!
This may occur on areas of a tooth adjacent to the bracket or band if you do not brush your teeth thoroughly after each meal. We advise the daily use of a fluoride rinse after brushing your teeth before bedtime. Preventing the problem is simple, and it is up to you!
